Rabbit problems and how best to deal with them:

The European rabbit (oryctolagus cuniculus) is thought to have been introduced into the UK by the Romans in or around AD 43 to provide a suitable source of food. Uncontrolled however, it was only a matter of time before populations soon spread with rabbits invading the entire UK. This species can now be found in almost every continent throughout the world with the exception of the arctic regions.

Rabbits live and breed in burrow networks underground known as warrens and their nuisance factor presents in two forms:

  • Damage to amenities, vegetation and crops through continual foraging
  • Damage to the landscape and the undermining of structures due to burrowing.

A medium to large population of rabbits can strip a field of young crop seedlings in next to no time. Livestock and horses can also find themselves competing for food as rabbits devour every last blade of grass from any available grazing pastures.

The burrowing can seriously undermine motorway and rail embanks as well as the root structure of large trees causing them to topple during periods of high winds. Burrows also cause unstable ground which might collapse under the weight of people and large animals. Horses and riders are particularly at risk where the situation could become fatal.

Civic amenities like golf courses and football pitches etc. can also fall victim to rabbit activity as individuals dig the ground for moisture rich roots and to create new burrows.

Controlling a given rabbit problem depends on the local environment and the level of activity. A gassing procedure is an ideal way to reduce rabbit numbers dramatically overnight but it requires specialist training to buy and use due to the very hazardous nature of the product (aluminium phosphide).

Alternative methods of control can include the installation of rabbit proof fencing, ferreting, trapping and shooting (if safe to do so).
